Jan 8, 2016 11:40 AM in response to Tom Wolskyby Ingo2711,How much free space do you have left on the phone?
Did you try to transfer the content of the camera roll to your Mac and delete the photos after that from the phone, to get more free space?
Since the backup will replace the content of the camera roll as well, this should be no problem.
Then try again to restore.

Jan 8, 2016 12:01 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby Ingo2711,★HelpfulConnecting in recovery mode and setting the phone up as new device could work as well, but would be a rather radical approach.
You might want to save the latest backup, just in case the phone tries to backup before it is getting erased.

Jan 8, 2016 12:00 PM in response to Ingo2711by Tom Wolsky,4.9GB according to iTunes. 5+GB of Other. About the same of Documents. Not sure what Documents are though I assume it's Mail related. Little more clarity in the iTunes display would be really helpful.
No. I transfer some images using Photos with delete after importing, but I backed up after that.
Same problem whenever I try to restore.

Jan 8, 2016 12:04 PM in response to Ingo2711by Tom Wolsky,NNot sure I want to go to the nuclear option just yet, as, based on this performance, I'm not sure I trust the software to function correctly in any way. Would like to have the software work properly and not just throw up.

Jan 8, 2016 12:22 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby Ingo2711,★HelpfulThose 5GB of "Other" might be the problem. Usually this section should not be bigger than 1-2GB, just checked on my 64GB iPhone5s, I have 800MB of "other". This is the place where also data is stored that can't be read by iTunes or the phone anymore, not all of the data is seen as damaged, but some surely is.
This part of the iPhone storage can only be reduced to it's normal size by restoring the phone.
What is "Other" and What Can I Do Abo…
Documents and data is used to store 3rd party data, for example maps or other databases.
So, I'm afraid, you'll have to set it up as new device, before you can use this backup to restore the phone.

Jan 8, 2016 12:24 PM in response to Ingo2711by Tom Wolsky,TThe Other is why I was trying to do the restore. Burning the phone and rebuilding it is a major PITA. The user should not ever have to do this. This is just incompetent software.

Jan 8, 2016 12:42 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby Ingo2711,Yes, each version of the iOS software has to have more features and, if possible, a new version every year
I think that the syncing process could be part of that problem, since more and more data has to be transferred in a short period of time. And of course, there's El Capitan and iTunes 12, sometimes I feel glad that I'm still on 10.9.5

Jan 8, 2016 12:55 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby fromsouth,Sorry to say, but that occurs quite often usually when phone is overfilled. IOS Stops reading file sizes properly, stops removing information properly, hence large "other" area. User suffers and learns to not overfill. Or does not learn..., cause it is obviously not his, but software's fault. App slicing was suppose to help that, but phones rarely get overfilled with apps, mostly photos and videos. Plus people who do overfill with apps usually know what they doing. BTW overfilling Windows or Mac is kind of similar... There is one more reason, phone may be close to being overfilled and then someone runs update and updated ios takes up a bit more space and then again backup is too large.
BTW 800 megs of other is perfect it is clean IOS.

Jan 8, 2016 1:20 PM in response to fromsouthby Tom Wolsky,WWhat constitutes overfill?
APps and and other are the largest sectors on the phone.
-
Jan 8, 2016 1:39 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby Ingo2711,There is no overfill, it just has been a glitch while transferring data, this happens, and that is why you have backups ready.
All it takes is a little dent in your Usb cable, a damaged pin inside the docking port or problems on your computer HD.
But, you probably know that, as you are dealing with video files and FCP.
At least it's not a Windows phone

Jan 8, 2016 1:53 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby fromsouth,Overfill is when you go to check storage on your phone and there is very little or none available, until then you usually don't even notice that other that grows up exponentially. When there is no space available you start deleting things, but IOS does not read deletion. Pictures are gone, but available space does not increase. I have seen different sources of other, once created 25 gigs myself during few min. Iphone owner wanted to stop itunes match and sync music locally for international travel next day. Turned match off and started sync and boom - other. Were able to put back on the phone only part of her music and one month late, she came back and we rebuilt the phone. Ideally if IOS worked as suppose to in a month at least some of that other was suppose to at least subside, it didn't.
And yes it is a glitch when transferring or deleting or processing data, that due to one of the processes stops being recognized by Operating System.
And with "other" restore from backup in 99 % cases brings it back.
BTW People actually pretty happy with Windows phones, tempted to get one just to try, price wise they practically free now. How do you like that analog of 5C?

Jan 8, 2016 2:03 PM in response to fromsouthby Tom Wolsky,No indication that the phone was full. Free space was usually 5.5GB. When Other increased to 5+ free space went down to 4.5? Numbers keep fluctuating though no changes are made on the phone. Others now jumped to 7.46 and free has gone to 2.13. Really BS software both on the phone and on the Mac.

Jan 8, 2016 2:06 PM in response to Tom Wolskyby Tom Wolsky,Now free has gone to 20.99 and Other is at 4.19.

Did you actually complete full sync once?
