Unable to send mail from the Mail app after changing to two step verification for iCloud

I changed access to my iCloud account to two-step verification. Now when using the Mail app on my iMac, I can no longer send mail. iCloud is offline and it won't accept my password to send mail. What can I do to resolve this?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)
