How do I remove backups on my Macintosh HD?

All of a sudden I have a huge chunk of my hard drive space showing as backups. It matches the backup size on my external My Passport.

I don't know how this happened unless a back up ran when I had My Passport unplugged.

How do I remove it from the HD to free up space?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012)

Please read this Apple support article:

Since they will fall off if space is needed for other data, you may ignore them.

If you turn Time Machine off and restart the MBP, they will disappear, but run Time Machine first.
