file sharing user name not working

Trying to file share over local wifi network between MBA and iMac. Both on Yosemite.

MBA sees the iMac over network:

I click on "Connect As..." and enter main account name and the password (note: this combination works fine on iMac when logging in at startup and for other operations).

However, this same usr/pwd combination is rejected for sharing.

Is the sharing password somehow different to the local password on iMac?

Any ideas?

Hey SaltSeaShark,

It sounds as if you are trying to connect to your iMac for file sharing over your local network and attempting to log in using the user account name and password for that iMac but it is not allowing you to connect. Is that right?

One thing to check here would be to see if the iMac is set up for file sharing, since it is not enabled by default. Use the steps in this article - OS X El Capitan: Share your files with other Mac users

Note that you can set up file sharing for all users of the iMac or select specific users. Be sure that you have set up the correct user(s) to share.

Also, in the System Preferences > Sharing panel > File Sharing select the Options button. In the next window, you should at the least have Share files and folders using AFP selected. (Windows users would normally connect using SMB.)

How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac

Advanced Options

If you want to limit which protocols can be used to connect to your computer using File Sharing, click the Advanced Options button in the Sharing pane. You can then select which protocols are used by your Mac. By default, OS X Mavericks and later automatically enable SMB and AFP for compatibility with Windows computers, Macs using Mavericks and Yosemite, and Macs using older versions of OS X.

Once having made sure this is set up correctly, use the steps in this article to connect to the iMac's shared volume - OS X El Capitan: Connect to shared computers and file servers on a network

We are having the same problem as SaltSeaShark.

We have multiple computers on a wired/wireless network.

We're having problems connecting to one MacBook Pro that was recently upgraded to El Capitan.

On the MBP, File Sharing is turned on and the users are set correctly. SMB and AFP are checked.

On every other computer on the network, we can connect to the MBP using the admin account. However, we cannot connect to the MBP using the MBP user's regular account. As with SaltSeaShark, the account name/pwd combination that works fine for logging in on the MBP does not work in the Connect As dialog box on other computers when trying to connect to the MBP.

We're looking for troubleshooting suggestions.

Thanks!

SO try again.

i Have the same problem. I have two userids on the 'Sharing' MacBook Air, but I can only connect to one of them. Tried reboots, re-creation of connecting userds - all failed - but inky for that user in that computer.

PLan to backup, delete, recreate, and restore the errant user id. I believe that will work.
