Perhaps it went on vacation, or got ill and wound up in hospital.
Could you be a little more specific about the image screensaver
in use or where the original was stored, if it were one of your own
or a system image. If you tried logging out of the system, or into
another user account; or other general procedures to try to see if
the system had a minor issue that prevented it from being used(?)
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
You could start in Safe mode, as that sometimes can fix a minor
glitch, then restart normally. Could be something isn't loading up
on startup -- or if you haven't restarted the Mac lately, that can be
of help to resolve these user-interface issues.
{Beginning with OS X El Capitan, system file permissions are automatically pro
tected. It's no longer necessary to verify or repair permissions with Disk Utility.}
There may be an issue where a simple restart of start in safe mode
may help; or there may be other items involved such as different
applications you have acquired that could affect the OS X.
Not knowing more, I daresay that I've written too much.
But that hasn't stopped me before... 🙂
K Shaffer is correct.
Effective December 15, 2015 all Screen Savers are required to take a 3 week vacation. After 5 years of employment they have also been granted a 3 month sabbatical and after 10 years a 6 month sabbatical. After 30 years of employment they receive a monthly pension equaling 90% of their last annual salary plus they are eligible for any other government benefits. 🙂
