How can I tell if my sent email has been received and opened

How can I determine if my email has been received and opened by the recipient?

Not really, and the closest way to do it requires a lot of effort. I'm guessing it's not the answer you're looking for, but I don't want to just say "no" when there is in fact a way.

You can put in the email a remote HTTP image, hosted on your own web server, with a specific URL just for that email and then see if someone accesses that URL later. Even then, the receiver's email client would need to load remote images for that to work. So it'll tell you if the receiver opens the email but won't tell you if the receiver doesn't open it. It's a tactic used by spam bots to see if people are reading their spam, but you could use it for good purposes.
