Q: Changes to  iTunes Match automatically download to iPad

Hi,

I've been adding new CDs, rematching tracks and editing (changing genre, etc.) to my iTunes Match library  over the past couple of weeks. This all works fine on my home Mac (which contains the full library) and my laptop (which accesses everything through the cloud). However, every time I add something new or edit an existing track it downloads to my iPhone and iPad. Automatic downloads are disabled on both iPhone and iPad and a couple of albums I have purchased recently haven't automatically downloaded. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and how I can stop it? I don't keep much music on my iPhone and my iPad doesn't have much storage. iCloud Music Library is turned on on both iPhone and iPad as I do want access to my music, I just don't want it to automatically download.

Thanks

Alasdair

    Hi, Alasdair Archibald1.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you are seeing your entire music library on your iOS devices and only want to show what is downloaded.  Since you have disabled automatic downloads, let's adjust a couple settings and then test.  First, open the Music application and make sure that, "Only Downloaded Music" is enabled.

View just songs, albums, and playlists that you downloaded to your device

    • iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch: In the My Music tab, tap Library. Then tap any of the different views (Artists, Albums, etc.), and turn on Only Offline Music. A message that says "Showing only music on this [device]. Show All Music." appears at the top of the screen. Tap Show All Music to see all of your music.

Add music from the Apple Music catalog to your library on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC

With iTunes Match and Apple Music, they allow you access to your entire music library on all of your devices.  This can include downloading it directly to the device or allowing streaming access with an internet connection.  If you have these services and with iCloud Music enabled, this is normal behavior as it allows you to also stream your iTunes purchases.
