I believe what you need to get best access to your Oracle Database is installing Oracle SQL Developer. Free, can be installed in most any platform and grants you access to all you may want in an Oracle DB. You will need to install the latest Java 8 JDK first, since it runs on that.

I use it constantly to carry out queries and such on our corporate Oracle Database 12c we run on an Oracle Solaris 11 server. I'm using the same MBP as you, but with 10.11.2 El Capitan, with no issues.

Edit: just reread your message. If you already have access to an installed Oracle Database running elsewhere, SQL Developer will let you interact as needed. If you do NOT have a preexisting Oracle Database and need to install one, use VirtualBox to set up a virtual machine with adequate resources. Can be Windows (will require licensing) or Oracle Solaris (free). Once the VM is running, download the appropriate version of Oracle Database and install. You will need to know how to sysadmin the system on the VM, as well as handing the DB.

This started Saturday night, and the OP received advice about MySQL which is more lightweight (single program, not an ecosystem like Oracle) and had found an online source for VM image of a working Oracle. But the deadline stated was "Monday morning, instructor will refuse attendance at lecture".

The OP has not stated if the deadline was met with either MySQL or the online download of a pre-made 6 GB VB image. And many basic concepts of DB, including SQL as the common language I am sure, was not explained as "parts of the SQL world" initially.

Back here we're Oracle all the way. In the past 2 years together with the DBA (I'm the OS guy, amongst many other things), I've installed ODB 10g, 11g and now 12c about 8-10 times. On the Mac with an Sol11.2 VM, on a Sparc test box and finally the new production server, virtualized using Solaris Domains on a big T4 box. Plus help a bit with the care and feeding of the Oracle WebLogic applications servers. I also get a wee bit of access permissions on one of the tables, which is why I use SQL Developer. So yeah, not a complete stranger to things Oracle...
