Q: basic q re setting up a contact so I can iMessage him

This is such a basic question but I don't know anyone to ask! I have a macbook air and am very new to it.  I'm in the UK. My son in the USA set up some original stuff for me and it works fine.

I have a contact already set up. I wish to iMessage him - he also has a macbook air. I also wish to FaceTime him. I have put in a mobile phone number for him and his email address in the contacts card. We wish to communicate macbook to macbook - not bothered about the mobile phones.

However, when in messages and I select his name and try to send a message, his name goes red and I'm told this contact is not registered. What does this mean?

I can imessage other contacts.  When I look at their contact cards the symbol for audio and video is blue whereas on his contact card it is greyed out.

What can I do?  I realise this is pretty basic stuff!!  Please can anyone out there help?

You can only use FaceTime to call a phone number if at least one of the following conditions is satisfied:

    1. It's an iPhone number, and the phone is signed in to FaceTime.
    2. The callee's Mac is signed in to FaceTime, and his or her iPhone number is linked to the Apple ID.

If the number is not an iPhone number, you can't call it. Use the callee's email address linked to the Apple ID instead.
