Unable to activate imessage even after clean install.

For the last few years, I've been unable to activate Messages on my Mac Pro. I've had repeated calls to Apple Support, and read all the postings I can find. Yesterday I once again reformatted one of my drives and installed El Capitan from scratch on that disk, and did not import settings or files from Time Machine. I did obviously authenticate with my Apple ID to iCloud to make the attempt at getting iMessage up, and it continues to give the error that it is unable, and for me to try again later. Other aspects of iCloud seem to work, an iMessage works fine on 10 other devices that come and go as I replace laptops and phones as the years pass. They all use the same iCloud account, keychain, facetime, Messages settings, and the like. Has anyone found anything so entrenched in a system that even a clean install would not clear this type of error? I suspect something being reimported from keychain or other iCloud settings, but as they exist on my other systems, I'm stumped. Currently running 10.11.2 on a Early 2009 Mac Pro with about 40TB of storage in 5 RAID arrays, etc. But this has existed for several major releases of OS X at least.

No wifi on this model, so only Ethernet direct to a port on a airport time capsule, which in turn connects to my cable service, a corporate 120Mbps down / 30Mbps up comcast link. Nat on the cable router, private subnet behind it, time capsule in double nat mode. Etrecheck attached.

More or less. It became an exercise in diminishing returns. We created new user accounts - no change. So they suggested a clean install. I did that later when I had the time. They also suggested waiting for another major OS release to see if anything changed. It didn't. It's not the end of the world, just inconvenient and puzzling. I've never heard of anyone having the problem with other apple id-related services working ok, just not imessage.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

That's not a clean install, of course. While there's nothing installed here that seemingly might overtly block messages — and if Apple indicated an upgrade might fix this, then maybe they know there's a bug here? — I'd try Messages with just OS X installed, if you've not already tried that. That can usually involve an external install of OS X, to avoid having to mess around with the internal disks.

How is the local network firewall configured? Any inbound port blocks or any port forwarding settings or any outbound port blocks?

Jan 13, 2016 5:06 AM in response to MrHoffman

You are right that it's not clean. I indeed had installed OSX on one of the external re-formatted RAID arrays a few days ago and tried there. By default, Apple turns the firewall off, and that was the case on the new install. But I turned it on, however, for safety, and that is it's state on my day-to-day OS install you saw in the EtreCheck log above. I always configure the firewall to NOT block incoming connections, to ignore incoming ICMP-based probes, and to permit properly certificated software to receive incoming connections. I'm not sure I am consistent with my other devices -- I need to chase that.

Just as a quick test, just now I turned the firewall off on my server, and tried enabling my messages account. As it has done from time to time (which I have not mentioned before), it enabled and showed the configuration panel one would expect --- but alas, only for a few seconds, and then once again failed by reverting back to the error (images attached). This is without any action on my part. It happens regardless of the firewall settings, and maybe once in 10-20 tries. It may be correlated to reboots or some other type of reset, but I've not been able to pin it down. In any event, this time it was with the firewall off. And my other devices are connected via wifi to the same apple time capsule (this server is cabled). It's bizarre.

You are making me want to do a little more network digging. According to this article, Apple appears to use TCP port 5222 for messages. However, it's defined only as "ichat and Jabber", so it's not authoritative. I can set up a sniffer and find out. And then try sending test packets to and from this server through the Time Capsule and to another, properly messaging MacBook. I think I'm way off to the side for most of the people helping at Apple Support, even tier 2. Not sure where to take it next.

Well, since the other devices on my network -- a variety of Mac laptops and ipads and iphones all are able to message through that network using three different Apple ID accounts, I had ruled that out empirically. But to eliminate all of the local network gear, I moved the Mac Pro to a built-in switch on a Cisco router that tunnels via VPN back to a corporate network, over which I've run Messages before with a work laptop. That cuts out any port filtering or ACLs or any other esoteric network settings I've made locally and inherits those of the corporate network. Same exact result. The problem is not the network. Sigh.

Firewalls can selectively block for specific hosts, if so configured. Firewalls can also get connections tangled. But with a different network path via a VPN to a separate network, probably not the settings on your local network firewall. I'd avoid double NAT — that's always good for triple damage scores — though why that would effect just one system? Probably something with OS X on this particular box. I'll assume only one network connection is active on the Mac Pro. But also given what you're describing, your network might not be a typical home network, either. How many routers, subnets and/or vlans do you have here?

MrHoffman wrote:

I knew that question was coming LOL. It's complicated -- I teach computer networking at a university, designed worldwide backbone networks for a major carrier for many years, and work for a networking equipment manufacturer.... I'm doomed genetically to a complicated network. To answer your question, here's the network. In my defense 😊, when I moved the MacPro over to the 881, I bypassed everything on the network. I've tried moving other working devices to the same physical port the MacPro is using, to try and get them to break, with no luck.

What you've got is... hairy.

I'd test the Mac Pro in the 10.1.0.0(presumably /16 to /24) block directly off the NetGear, would switch the TC to its bridged (AP) mode, and consolidate all of the subnet networks into one private block — probably with all the subnets in 172.16.0.0/12, as few use that — and would banish all NAT save for the NetGear.

I'd get a managed switch or two, and would use VLANs and not multiple NATs. The prices on the web-managed GbE switches have cratered, and you're well into the VLAN territory with that structure. Double NAT really makes things ugly. Add a gateway router for traffic across the VLANs if that's expected, and if you want some control or isolation.

I'd also get a local DNS server — either OS X Server or a gateway with embedded DNS capabilities. If there's not already one hiding in that network.

...and a firewall that supports a DMZ, it any of that gear is externally accessible.

I'll presume just one GbE NIC is configured and active on the Mac Pro, and it's the first in the list of adapters, and that no Wi-Fi is active, and that there are no "creative" networking settings. One path, one route, one set of DNS servers, etc. If it's a Mac Pro trashcan and not a cheese-grater, I'd be tempted to carry it elsewhere for a quick test, too. Maybe to the local Apple Store, if there is one.

But this is a hairy network configuration.
