I'd like to play just one song without having to press the stop button
Is there any way to get Apple's music player on the iPad to play just one song without having to press the stop button at the end of the song?

Thank you, Chris. I had discovered the method you described, and while it works, I don't want to have to do that every time I play a song. I've sent feedback to Apple asking for the option of single-play in iTunes and on iOS devices.
Actually, in the Music App on the iPad, if you want to play a single song, there is a workaround, where you clear the contents of the Up Next List. Just getting to the Up Next list is a little bit of work. When you start a single song, you can bring the song up to full screen. When you do this, you will see a series of 3 lines, that look like a bullet list to the right of the fast forward controls. Tap on that and it should bring up the Up Next List. You should see the Up Next: From Music, then to the right see Add Clear. Tap on Clear. You will get a warning: Clear Up Next/Cancel. Select Clear Up Next. That will clear the list and your music will stop after that single song.
Here's a little help.

That doesn't solve my problem because I would like to select a playlist of several songs and then play just one of the songs in the playlist.
The developer's contact information for Play On Cue was isn't listed on the webpage found through the Developer Website link at the iTunes store, but with a google search I found it and emailed him. In the meantime I found another app, One Track Mind, that might satisfy my needs.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/one-track-mind/id509958487?mt=8
I installed Play On Cue and discovered that it does not work as advertised. It's FUBAR, so I will investigate other players that have the features I need.
In the music app, no sorry not possible. But check out the App Store for some of the DJ apps as one of them may offer that. The only one I know of is "play on cue" where you have to actively tap to play each song in a playlist. It's $1.99 and there may be free alternatives, but that's the only app I personally know that does that sort of thing.
Michael, Play On Cue looks like it might be exactly what I need, and for just $2! Not only does it use playlists from iTunes, it appears that the transport controls are designed better than those on the iPad.

That's not good then. You should contact the developers and let them know of your issues. If it really does no longer work as advertised (it used to) then you can contact the App Store support (via the web page here under support) and request a refund.
Thank you, Michael. I'll check out Play On Cue.
You're welcome. I do not ever remember the option to play a single song, so I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope. But then, it could happen.
