Jan 11, 2016 3:32 PM in response to Alex Cordby Alex Cord,Anybody please?? I have now reinstalled OSX from scratch, tried again using a new Win 10 ISO image, done the PRAM, and SMC reset, installed again and same issue... Win 10 falls over on first boot with Critical_Process_Died.
I have spoken to Apple and they aren't sure.
BTW - using El Capitan

Jan 11, 2016 3:38 PM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,1. Does the Windows installer work properly, till you get to creating an account?
2. If you are able to create an account and set a password on the Windows side, does it fail after it tries to run the BC Drivers update?

Jan 11, 2016 3:41 PM in response to Loner Tby Alex Cord,Hi Loner T, was hoping you would come a long, you seem like the font of all knowledge in this forum!!!
The installer works fine, just running through it again at the moment. Seems to go through the copying files, install features, updates etc and then reboots into Windows 10, I get the spinning dots and then after a moment or so, returns "Your PC ran into a problem...." "Critical_process_died"
:-(

Jan 11, 2016 3:51 PM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,Are you connected to the network when you run the installer? If yes, disconnect all network connections on the first screen of the Installer (where you select the partition) and test.
Can you post the output of the following OSX Terminal commands?
diskutil list
diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1
sudo fdisk /dev/disk1
The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Jan 11, 2016 4:26 PM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,Since you are installing W10, it should be EFI (and does not need an MBR). Try to install without a network connection when the installer starts.

Jan 11, 2016 4:53 PM in response to Loner Tby Alex Cord,Hi, well I lived in hope. Removed partition using bootcamp. Rebooted mac, did PRAM reset, booted into OSX. Fired up Boot camp again but just selected the bottom option as media had been created numerous times and then disconnected ethernet as the machine rebooted to install Win 10 from the USB drive. Install completed without error but same result upon first reboot.
I know you are somewhat of a Disk guru? Did all of my results looks fine? As a belt and braces approach I did use Terminal to run some low level splitting and re-fusing the SSD and platter drive.
Nearly 1 am so off to bed but thanks for all of your help so far and look forward to any advice you may be able to give. As I said, happy to start from scratch and have a 2nd Mac so can build bootable El Capitan disks if the iMac/drive needs to be taken back to basics.
Kind regards
Alex

Jan 11, 2016 5:46 PM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,Your GPT/FDisk look clean. Are you manually selecting Windows or EFI Boot to pick a specific installer?
-
Jan 11, 2016 11:09 PM in response to Loner Tby Alex Cord,i am pretty sure that it is automatically choosing the EFI installer (looks like a high resolution installer ie. 121 graphics. After the failed installs, I have held the option key down and selected the EFI installer and it looks the same. I have also in the past chosen the orange coloured Windows drive which also initiates an install procedure but I get GPT error when trying to install?
Is Bootcamp fouling things up? Should I manually configure the partitions using disk utility and then option key boot to EFI to try another install? This is getting more and more frustrating, particularly as I have wiped a perfectly setup OSX to try and facilitate the install.
Thanks for all of your help so far.
best regards

Jan 12, 2016 2:26 AM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,1. Can you verify that your USB is a USB2 flash drive? I have also seen issues where generic USB brands do not work properly.
2. Disconnect all storage and ethernet/USB connections.
3. Run the following two procedures
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
4. Re-run the EFI Installer.

Jan 12, 2016 2:34 AM in response to Loner Tby Alex Cord,HI, I have used two different usb devices now the latest being a Kingston USB 3.0 key. i will follow your steps to the letter when I get home and whilst I have done the smc and nvram, I haven't done it with all Ethernet connections removed. So just to be clear. are the steps below right?
1. Remerge partion using bootcamp
2. Disconnect ethernet
3. Reset smc and nvram
4. Re run bootcamp with Ethernet disconnected allowing it to reboot into the installer automatically or should I interrupt the process and hold option key to specifically choose EFI
thanks

Jan 12, 2016 2:45 AM in response to Alex Cordby Loner T,Since you do not have a Hybrid MBR, using the Windows icon from the USB will lead to a GPT vs. MBR error. Use the EFI Installer. We can also try the legacy Installer and test if it works. I assume you have plans to partition your disks any further.
-
Jan 12, 2016 2:49 AM in response to Loner Tby Alex Cord,OK great. No plans to do any further partitioning and where can I find info on legacy installer? I did also create a Win 7 iso but ran into issues with boot camp even though I had downloaded the older Bootcamp drivers relevant to my machine so didn't progress too much. Preferred route would be straight to 10 anyway.
thanks again for all your assistance!!
