Max RAM for early 2011 2.7Ghz intel core i7 says 8GB?

The Max RAM for an early 2011 2.7Ghz intel core i7 is 8GB according to Apple, but I saw a video of someone upgrading their same Macbook pro to 16GB RAM...can you add more RAM then is recommended? 16GB of RAM (2X8 )on amazon is only slightly more then 8GB of RAM (2X4) so I'm trying to decide what to upgrade to. Thanks in advance 🙂

Make sure the 16GB you get in an 8GBx2 configuration is MAC CERTIFIED. These computers are very finicky in terms of RAM. Generic El Cheapo sticks will usually not work. If you are lucky, the Mac will refuse to start from the get-go and you'll know the RAM was not acceptable, if not it will start just to freeze, restart and do all sorts of weird things later on.
