iPod Touch mystery

I have an old iPod Touch running 4.2.1 (latest it can run). I have stripped it of everything except the default apps, cleared all calendar events, put it in Airport mode, yet it will pop up event notifications. I use this in my workshop as just a music player, so I don't want any of the notifications popping up. Any thoughts on how these things are showing up? I mean, these notifications are for meetings that didn't exist when I stripped everything off, and the calendar still shows no events.
