If you have not already, try doing a Reset (restart) of iPod

If it goes back to the same error screen, try to putting iPod into Disk Mode

If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on computer and connect iPod.  If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery."  If you're OK with erasing iPod, tell iTunes to proceed with Restore.

If iPod does not go into Disk Mode, or the Restore fails, the most likely reason is a faulty hard drive.
