Q: Can't add any faces

Running Photos.app (Version 1.3 (350.23.0)) on a MacBook Air with El Capitan in German language.

Since two days I can't add any faces. The line where it used to display the button to add a face/person is no more displayed.

It didn't help to reboot the computer.

Below is an example of the window which is displayed when I click on "Info" (cmd-i). This is so for all photos in the library.

Do you have the photo enlarged?

The "+" to add a face is only available, if you double click the photo to enlarge it, not when viewing the thumbnail.

Leonie, you're right. I can't believe that it was that simple. I only recently started to use Photos App so this may serve as a kind of explanation. I'm glad you're around.

    You're welcome, Michael.

I've stumbled across the same inconsistency. It is not intuitive, that "Add Faces" is not available in thumbnail mode.

I have just hit the same problem today - in normal single photo viewing mode I can no longer add a face manually. Some of the faces in my latest photos had face rings but no names, so I added the correct names. But for half the faces there were no rings so I went hrough the usual "add a face" routine from the Info panel. The ring appears but it can't be moved. Instead, a miniature version of my photo appears, which can be dragged, but the ring cannot.

I saw the same complaint dated 2015 and the advice was to restart the computer. I just did this twice, but without useful effect. This function was working perfectly normally for me until a couple of weeks ago, so what has Apple done to create this new bug? I cannot understand it. If there is no workaround, then it's a really big problem for me. Obviously, I shall report it to Apple if this forum has no solution to offer.

I might also add that the "add a face" function is very obscure. Why is it not in the top-line menu or on a right click when in face viewing mode? I eventually found it in the Get Info panel, but why make this essential function so deeply hidden? In this and numerous other ways, the old slogan that "it just works" is increasingly untrue.

That is one of the problems, that is making working with Photos so slow and cumbersome. Many essential commands are only available in certain modes. We can only add ad face, when the photo has been enlarged, but it would be much more convenient to o directly from the thumbnail to "Add face" with a keyboard shortcut. And many editing commands require to be in edit mode. This prevents batch editing.
