Thunderbolt 1 is 10 Gbps and Thunderbolt 2 is 20 Gbps, so, if you do the math, there will never be a Thunderbolt adapter that would work with the current Retina MacBook.
The Apple Thunderbolt Cinema Display requires a Mac with a Thunderbolt port, that would include all currently shipping Macs with the exception of the MacBook.
