Apple Remote Desktop 3.8 loses connection

I am using ARD 3.8 admin software and 3.8.4 client software on 19 iMac 2.9 ghx i5 computers, all have 16gb of ram. ARD connects ok to the lab, but often loses its connection, especially when locking and unlocking-- screen sharing also seems slow. At times the main computer loses the connection completely and exclamation points appear in the ARD control window, and each computer in the lab must be forced to restart manually. Any help is appreciated...
