Q: i cant send or receive messages - my calling doesnt work either so Apple can't contact me via phone

If calls aren't working, contact your cellular carrier first.

Restore the device to factory and test. Make your backup first. However, I've not seen a phone fail to make a call due to a lack of storage space, since storage space has nothing to do with making a call.

How do you know that for sure, when making a phone call has nothing to with available storage?

Since you've made up your mind that the problem is that it's out of space, just plug it into iTunes and restore it as a new device. Problem solved.
