If I understand your post correctly, your iMac is unable to connect to both the iTunes Store and App Store. I know this must be frustrating, especially since you're trying to update your OS, so in order to get this resolved I'd like you to please follow through the steps in the link below.
If you can’t connect to the iTunes Store
