Jan 12, 2016 5:49 PM in response to peteshby sberman,★HelpfulIt sounds as if you have a major problem since you've never backed up the iPad before, therefore, the iPad thinks it's a new device.
These steps may help:
If you can't make an iTunes backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Or you might be able to try File > Devices > Back Up from iTunes' menu as soon as you plug your iPad into iTunes.
But frankly, I'm pessimistic any of these will work for you. They're worth a shot, however.

Jan 13, 2016 6:24 PM in response to sbermanby petesh,Thanks for your input. I have managed to do it.
IN the end it was ridiculously easy. After trawling through the apple help sites and the forum for advice I called apple tech a number of times and eventually a very helpful lady helped me fixit.
All it needed was to click on set up as new iPad. Wait a couple of minutes whilst it recognised the iPad ( which could be seen by a dark line running across the apple bar at the top - similar to when you are syncing) Once finished the normal screen that you get when you connect any DeviCe came up and then it Jlist do a backup as normal.
so easy yet so difficult to find how to do it.

Jan 13, 2016 10:22 PM in response to peteshby sberman,That's interesting!
Your original post said you were offered the opportunity to set up as new, but you were concerned you would lose your data. Now it sounds as if you were presented with set up as new, and you chose that option, and everything went just fine.
I'm glad it worked out for you.
Enjoy your Apple gear.
