Screen Background Pix

I have an iMac Model iMac11,3, Intel for i7, 2.93 GHz, 16GB Memory running OS X 10.11.2 (15C50). I also run Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac Pro Edition Version 11.1.2 (32408) with Windows 7. My system is about 5 years old and all software is up to date.

For a few months now I have been experiencing what appears to be pixelation on the monitor. I could use some app windows that move them around it would would act like an eraser and wipe the pixels from the screen. Sometimes this wouldn't work or the pixelation would move else where. I researched the issue and the only thing I could find was a recommendation to reset the NVRAM. This is not solve the problem. Today it occurred to me that the problem only affects the monitor display of the screen saver. APP windows were not affected but the exposed monitor background screen saver (El Capitan 1) remained pixelated. I also noticed that if I ran a VMWare connect to my work computer the default display is full screen and I never experience pixelation there. If I reboot the system it there will be no pixelation. When pixelation occurs I’ll get different size blocks jumping all over and then they’ll stop. The pixelation does not occur on an app window. If I move an app window over an area with the pixelation the pixelation is hidden until I move the app window.

This leads me to believe that the problem is either related to a running APP (process) or possibly the background screen saver. So I've switched the screen saver from the El Capitan 1 to a solid blue color. I also do not believe it is Parallels or Windows related because the problem occurs even when Parallels or Windows 7 are not running.

Try dragging the screen saver plist file to your desktop, it will recreate itself. It's located in the library folder in top directory of your hard drive. Should be

Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist

Then try your screen saver again. If everything works ok you can trash the file you dragged onto your desktop.

Thank you very much for your reply. I followed your directions and after about 12 hours the problem returned. This time I changed my background screen color and it immediately stopped but that only lasted for about 10 minutes. I also noticed when the problem initially starts and the groups of pixels flash and move about the screen if I move an app window parts of the app window will become pixellated.

I wonder if

  1. Could it possibly be a virus or malware? I have Sophos and that doesn't show anything; or
  2. Is it time to wipe it clean and start with a clean load. I've never done that with a Mac.

Any other suggestions?

Mike,

I removed Sophos and performed the H/W Test five times and no reported issues were noted. The problem is getting worse in that the pixelation is occurring more frequently and the entire system is locking and I'm forced to perform a hard reboot by powering down the system. I think I'd like to do a completed clean installation, hence my post that you responded to for clarification on installing OS X on the flash drive and configured to use the 1TB HD for user accounts and data.

If that doesn't work maybe it's time to get a new system.

I don't think it's time to give up on a good mac yet! There could still be a problem that AHT didn't find as it's sometimes unreliable when it reports no errors but it's pretty much 100% when it does report errors. Sad but it's the best too they give us.

Would you consider running and posting an EtreCheck report? http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck That could help us determine what might be going on.

Jan 15, 2016 1:02 PM in response to SeaPapp

I really like your persistence Mike and appreciate your help. I downloaded EtreCheck and the first pass recommended running a check for Malware. I used MalwareBytes. It found two items that I removed. The second pass with EtreCheck basically said the same thing. I also ran BitDefender and it didn't find anything. Do think it's time to try wiping the hard drives and reloading the OS?

Well Mike, Four (4) hours operating in safe mode and not one pixelation or lock up problem. I've never ran in safe mode before. Is it normal for things to very excessively slow? For example, when I select the APP folder (set for Grid), it comes up and then the graphic cycles down three times in the course of about 45 seconds before you can do anything.

So, this leads me to believe that it is some type of software problem. I would really like to continue troubleshooting to determine exactly what it is, but I at the point that I think I may be need to reformat the hard drives and reinstall the entire system. I need to get it back up and running without having to deal with the problems.

Your thoughts?

Yes it's normal that everything is slow, you can reboot normally now. That the problem doesn't happen in Safe Mode tells us one of two things, it's a software problem or your graphics card is failing. Safe Mode disables advanced graphics so it could be a GPU problem. Sometimes booting into Safe mode fixes problems too as it clears some caches and attempts to do some system repairs when it's booting up. Restart and see if the problem persists.

ANother thought, try turning off SpamSieve and testing.
