Q: Cannot start into recovery mode

Hi there,

I destroyed the Master Boot Record and could only boot into Windows. I then used testdisk to create a new MBR. Now I can start into El Capitan.

The problem is that I cannot use Recovery HD and cannot install El Capital from Scratch. When pressing CMD+R, only "MacOS" and "EFI" appears. Pressing EFI leads to a black screen.

How can I start Mac from Scratch? Or how can I install Window, then Mac and then restore data from time machine backup?

You may be able to force your Mac to boot into Internet Recovery by holding down Command+Option+R at startup.

If not then you need another Mac to

    - Download the appropriate OSX  installer. They should be listed in the Purchased section of the Mac App Store if you previously downloaded them with the ID you are using.

    - Make a bootable USB media using the following:

    DiskMaker X

    - Boot from that media

    - Format the startup disk and install OSX from the bootable media

Thank you, I tried to do that. I found a yosemite.app file on a server and used diskmaker X. I showed a message that everything went successfull. When I reboot my Computer, I can choose the device, but after clicking on the symbol, a sign like "forbidden" (a circle with a diagonal bar) appears. Then I can only shut down my computer.

    Prohibitory symbol

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

If you're using your Mac at a school or business, it might be trying to start from the wrong version of OS X. Contact your IT department for more help.

If this is your personal Mac, try reinstalling OS X by using OS X Recovery.

I would redownload the Yosemite installer and try again
