MacBook not recognizing HDMI cable disconnecting

Specs:

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display 2015
  • Processor: 2.5GHz
  • 16GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 370X
  • OS: El Capitan 10.11.2

The Macbook does not recognize when I've disconnected a TV connected via HDMI. This causes problems when displaying applications on the TV because they are not visible on the monitor after disconnecting until reconnecting, dragging the windows over to my monitor, and disconnecting again.

The Macbook thinks it's still connected, but it's not:

Howdy coopere905,

If your MacBook Pro is failing to recognize that a display or display cable has been disconnected it can help to reset the Mac's SMC and NVRAM, as detailed in the articles linked below.

All my best.
