Q: iCloud Photo Duplication/Organization Errors

I just started using iCloud Photo library.

My photos have successfully synched to iCloud from my Mac's iPhoto library.

They are visible now on my iPhone. However, they are "shuffled" - in completely random order when browsing on the iPhone Photos app.

If I open a photo on my iPhone, it 'downloads' to the device. Later, when I plug my iPhone into my Mac, iPhoto thinks these downloaded photos are "new" photos on the device, and imports them into my iPhoto library on my Mac (again). Some photos that I've opened many times on my iPhone are now in my iPhoto library several times.

I assumed that iCloud Photo Library would observe the timestamps of the photos and organize them chronologically across all devices and apps viewing the library.

I assumed that viewing a photo on my device would not result in its duplication in iPhoto or in my Library.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2

Don't download photos using USB from your iPhone.  If you are using iCloud Photo Library, all photos will sync using Wi-Fi. You only need to import using a USB connection, if no Wi-Fi is available for a longer period of time. As long as you  import only the most recent photos, where you are sure, that you took them since the last sync using Wi-Fi, there will be no duplication.

That makes sense, except I can't find any settings in iPhoto for turning off auto-import when I plug my phone into my Mac. That's how I charge my phone. Whenever I plug it in, it opens iPhoto and imports without asking me, and I see nothing in iPhoto preferences for changing this.

Are you using iPhoto or the Photos for mac application?  You keep writing iPhoto, but iPhoto cannot access iCloud Photo Library.

In Photos for Mac you can disable Photos from launching when your iPhone is connected.  Connect the iPhone again to USB. You should be seeing a checkmark "Open Photos for this device" below the toolbar. Disable this checkmark. Photos will not launch again for this device.

And if Photos launches nevertheless,  don't click "Import New". Simply dismiss the Import panel by switching to a differnet album in the sidebar.

In iPhoto you can set the "iPhoto > Preference > General: Connecting Camera opens ..." to "No application".  Then iPhoto will not launch.

Oops! I never even realized the name of the app had changed.

Now to figure out why all my photos are out of order on iCloud...
