Q: Viewing iphoto images offline on ipad

I have many photos on iphoto... When offline on my ipad, I can see the thumbnails, but when I try to view images full-screen they're blurry and the download icon in the bottom right corner has has " ! "

Presumably I need to download an image when online, so I can view it later when offline... How do I do this?

Ideally, since space is limited on my ipad I'd prefer the images downloaded were not 'Full Resolution', but just large enough to view full-screen

Thanks in advance for your help

iPad 2, iOS 9.2, null

The image will download from iCloud Photo Library, when you are online, and when you click to view it. But you have now ay to control, how long the full version will be kept. And the full version will download. You cannot control the size of the download.

If you want to be sure, that certain images are stored for offline viewing, disable iCloud Photo Library on the iPad and sync only selected albms to the iPad with iTunes Photo Sync, see:  Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support

With a large Photos library it can be painfully slow to present a slideshow in Photos, even when online, when each and every photo has to be downloaded from iCloud, before it can be presented.

    Thanks Léonie...

This is a bit disappointing - generally I really like using icloud for photo management - seems crazy that I can't choose to 'force download' some images to a device...

Does anyone know the criteria ios uses for determining how long the full resolution image is kept after downloading? Is it time based - if I could download say a dozen images the night before knowing they would be there the next day when offline 'in the field' that would work for me...

Failing that, are there any workarounds that would allow me to store some images on my pad, without having to disable iCloud? An app maybe?

You could try to keep the iCloud Photo Library small, so it will only contain your most important photos.  Then the chance will be higher the the photos you need will be available when you are off-line.

You can have several Photos libraries, but only one will sync with iCloud.
