Q: my iBook G

My Apple iBook G3 can not connect to the internet. It dos not detect local networks. Apple cannot support it as it is "obsolete". Verizon could not help me. It should automatically detect local Wi-Fi networks and give me th option to connect. It doesn't. it can't detect local networks. Any ideas Can you get me Apple discussions 4472992?

Thanks

iBook (Dual USB), iOS 9.1, model M6497

The iBook G3 (Dual USB) only has 802.11b when the optional AirPort card is installed. I assume that you have that card installed? Do you have 802.11b support enabled on your wireless router?

You will need to access your router's configuration page to check for 802.11b operation.

If the AirPort card is installed in your iBook you will have wireless as an option. Is that option available?

Depending on what router you have . The normal one is 192.168.2.1 You type this into the top search page of your web browser. Then log into the router and go to the wifi settings Under channels and SSID ,you should see a box to pick the wireless mode.

It is better and safer to buy a "wireless ethernet bridge" which has fast WLAN performance and is hooked up to the ethernet port of your iBook.

It works platform independent (even with OS9.1- btw why do not upgrade to 9.2 at least?)

Isn't that going backwards to a technology which has ben obsoleted?

I think bund saw your IOS 9.1 and thought that was the operating system  your Ibook was running. I have not worked on an Ibook in some time so it took me a little to remember that the airport card on them is easy to get to. It is under the keyboard ,which can be removed as there are two clips at the bottom to unlatch.  But if the card is bad or not there. Finding one for that model might prove a little hard.If you remove the keyboard and take the screws out of the cover under, it there is the airport card and the memory.

Often the router uses 192.168.1.1. I haven't had one that uses ...2.1.

The AirPort card in the iBook G3 Dual USB is 802.11b. That is the only option for built-in wireless.

Ya. Mine is a belkin. An older one.But if it works don't fix it.  May brake down and get a newer Netgear or sometime. But not yet.
