I have an itunes account that was not being used for 3 years. When I logged into it, I am not able to see any of the songs I purchased all those years ago. Why am I unable to see them? Do purchases expire after a certain amount of time?

Not sure what you mean. Your music will only be where you put it.
Did you copy it from wherever it was to this computer/device? Do you not have a backup copy?
If not, then you can redownload some iTunes purchases in some countries.
In the iTunes store, go to Quick Links>Purchased
I had the music on an old shuffle, that no longer works. I only had the songs saved to my itunes account only. I do remember making a back up copy. I will have to try to locate it. If I do not have the backup copy, then I should redownload itunes?
Check first if you did not hide your songs without knowing it.

If you see them hidden, unhide them then you can redownload them for free using this link:

If you have a album that is not hidden and you can't see it in your past purchase page, it's probably that that album was removed from sales and thus you not having a copy to redownload.
