Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Apple TV 2 or 3
- Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
- Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
- Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
- Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
- Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)
Apple TV 4
- Restart the Apple TV (Settings > System > Restart).
- Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
- Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
- Reset the Apple TV (Settings > System > Reset > Reset all settings)
- Restore the Apple TV (Settings > System > Reset > Restore)

Jan 13, 2016 8:47 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Tylodge,oh, well, now I get a totally dark screen after the Apple TV restart step 2 ... the Apple boot shows on the screen for 10 seconds... then total darkness. I guess the Apple TV unit is dead... Will have to buy another one.
