    Welcome to the Apple Community.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

    Apple TV 2 or 3

    1. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    2. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    3. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    4. Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
    5. Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

    Apple TV 4

    1. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > System > Restart).
    2. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    3. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    4. Reset the Apple TV (Settings > System > Reset > Reset all settings)
    5. Restore the Apple TV (Settings > System > Reset > Restore)

oh, well, now I get a totally dark screen after the Apple TV restart step 2 ... the Apple boot shows on the screen for 10 seconds... then total darkness. I guess the Apple TV unit is dead... Will have to buy another one.

You should try an iTunes restore before totally throwing in the towel on the device (unless you just want yo upgrade/replace)
