unable to access mail on macbook after updating....password works on the aol site but does not on the mac mail app

unable to access mail on mac app after updating...password work on the aol site.....receive message unable to verify password.....have followed all the steps suggested to reset and still does not work

MacBook, iOS 6.1.2

Mac mail cannot tell the difference between "failed to connect" for any reason at all, and bad password. The dialog box it presents should be dismissed without entering anything, and you should make certain all the other settings are correct.


Mail >Window > Connection Doctor ...


... will allow you to zoom in on what settings are not yet working, by clicking on the red light.
