Q: New imac5K i7 preview app super slow raw photos? Lightroom5 super slow? very disappointed

I called Apple support about the preview app problem he wasn't able to help me.... this is  a 2 month old computer ....(I do photo editing) and this computer become a nightmare..why my 2011 iMac run like a Ferrari?...

When I open a single RAW photo with a preview app (canon 5dmarkII 21mp)takes wild for photo to take a shape .but I could deal with that...

the problem begins when I put (10 same problem)or (30same problem) photos takes about 4 seconds for photo to take a shape and when I click for next photo

I'm  getting a beach ball then my fan starts to go hundred miles an hour ..and then becomes unusable..... I'm using Lightroom5 (of course updated) and that's another nightmare I do not get a chance to use different programs on this computer so I can say nothing else .

definitely I'm losing trust to Apple product and the sad part is you hear that from people more often ....my point is I spent $2,600 on this computer and performance of this computer are a little bit better than my $250 laptop

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Lightroom 5 is not El Capitan compatible. It's over three years old.

I don't know that Lightroom 6 is compatible either. Lightroom CC is.

I don't work with raw images but my guess is you need to update Adobe Camera Raw.

FWIW, I just downloaded some Canon RAW images and Preview opened them instantly. So my guess is once again there are compatibility issues.

Tried some Hasselblad RAW images as well. Also open instantly.

You're welcome but it's not a problem with the computer. It's a problem with the out of date software you have installed.

I did mention two, Lightroom 5/6 and the Adobe Camera Raw plugin. Those were the ones that came to mind that may slow down Preview. What else you may have installed I couldn't say.

so you're saying if I uninstall Lightroom (and that's the only program I installed on this computer from outside) the Mac preview might work good .....

okay so I'm going to try this tomorrow ....I'm not trying to question your knowledgebut somehow I don't think I will help.....

when I use Mac preview mine CPU temperature shoot up 140F very quick       fan is going crazy and all of my CPU 8 course shooting up (activity monitor)

I think t'strange from viewing 10 or 30 photos computer behaving that way ......my 2011 iMac never broke a sweat and I did something I'm doing now ....and this computer is much faster

No, I am not saying that. I said the version of Lightroom you installed is not compatible. If you migrated data over from a previous Mac it could have brought any number of problem files with it. You could try booting your Mac in safe mode and see how Preview behaves then.

What I know is I bought my 5k iMac just over 2 months ago and Preview works well. As I mentioned it loads RAW images instantly. The fans have not spun up above idle as far as I know so far.

    Let me know.

Lightroom 5 is perfectly compatible with El Capitan. So is LR6.

    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1979186?start=0&tstart=0

Lightroom 6 is the current version of LR. Lightroom CC is v6 with some extra bells and whistles courtesy of the Creative Cloud subscription.

    This

FWIW, I just downloaded some Canon RAW images and Preview opened them instantly

is a meaningless test. The Raw from every model of camera its different - that's model, not Brand - so you're not comparing like with like.

Raw support on Preview is the business of the OS. LR's Raw support is quite independent of that - i.e. it's perfectly possible to open some raws in LR that would not be possible to open with Preview.

As the problem exists with with Preview and LR, I would wonder if the Raws themselves are the issue. Does your camera support different Raw settings?

FWIW, I don't understand why you posted the link about Lightroom 5. Other than the posts from Adobe, three users said it wasn't working and even one ACP said it wasn't working fully.

As far as the test being "meaningless", I started with images from Canon, then Hasselblad, then Nikon, then Minolta. I stopped there because all of then opened. i suppose I could have downloaded RAW images from all known cameras.

The point is that the Raw of any Canon doesn't matter. It has to be a raw from the same model of camera as all raws are different. That's one f the characteristics that changes from model to model own any brand of Camera. The Raw from a Canon 5D mark II is different from the Raw from a  Canon 5D mark II. The fact that you can open a "Canon raw" or a "Hasselblad Raw" means nothing. What's useful is knowing the specific model of Canon or Nikon etc. That's the key difference.

I have both LR5 and LR 6 running on machines with 10.11.

These are all just clarifying misstatements.

The key point is that Preview and LR use quite independent methods of rendering Raws. If the problem persists across different technologies then the possibility of the issue being with the file come to the fore.

I understood RAW images are different. I understood Adobe releases updates to their RAW plugin (9.3 currently) to support new cameras. I assume you are running Lightroom 6.3 then because Adobe recommends downloading it if you experience crashes or slow downs.

Are you actually running a Late 2015 5k Retina iMac? There are various issues with SkyLake CPUs. Including software, USB issues, and others running OSX 10.11.2. I have an open bug report since early Nov about one in particular and if you peruse the Developer Forums you will find others.

According to your profile you aren't. Nor are you running OSX 10.11.2.
