iOS does not run on Macs. iOS runs on phones and iPads, iPod Touch and watches. If you are using iOS 9, you are likely using Mac OS X 10.7 or later to sync with it. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to find your Mac OS X version. If it is 10.7 (10.10, 10.10.1, 10.10.2, 10.10.3, 10.10.4, 10.10.5, 10.11, 10.11.1, 10.11.2 10.11.3 are all later, but 10.1.5, 10.1.4, 10.1.3, 10.1.2, 10.1.1, and 10.1 are all earlier versions and can't sync with iOS 9) or later, résumés are most commonly edited in Word and Acrobat format. You don't need a full version of Word except for very special formatting. TextEdit offers limited Word support, and there are these applications that offer better Word support:

Alternatives to Microsoft Office

A flash drive typically indicates you are using a device that looks like:

User uploaded file

Most flash drives are preformatted in either NTFS or FAT32. That means you may run into some file naming convention issues. Keep your file name short and concise to 8 letters or more followed by a .doc, or .docx. If it is an Adobe Acrobat file, it would be .pdf.

Apple's Preview offers limited editing of PDF documents, though you can also edit PDF documents online with http://www.pdfescape.com/open/

or Adobe Acrobat Pro. The advantage of PDF documents is that you put the document on a website, and link directly to it for the recruiter to download without issue. However some recruiters because they want to edit the document themselves insist on Microsoft Word documents.

If you don't want any fancy formatting, the easiest way to send a cover letter and résumé is to simply send an e-mail directly to the recruiter, or have a LinkedIn account and refer the recruiter to the LinkedIn account. LinkedIn offers additional formatting options such as bullets and networking options if you don't mind some of the fees they offer. E-mail you can only rely on consistent formatting in the letters, numbers, any characters you find on a keyboard. Everything else varies depending on the e-mail software of the recipient (if it is any different from yours).

You posted to the Classic forum, which predates 10.5 and 10.7. Given your iOS version, I kind of doubt you have such an old Mac.
