Value of FileVault 2 question

I have a password protected Macbook Air; if someone steals it and somehow cracks my password, they have access to my files; this is also true if I've encrypted my Air. Is the primary value of FileVault to prevent a thief from accessing data by removing and mounting the ssd as an external drive?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Yes.

Also when you sell your Mac, you only have to reformat the disk and install the original OS X version and you do not need to worry about all your data on the SSD, as the reformat is going to destroy the key so all your data is now just a bunch of random bits.
