Error 27 - Any Fix? Restore Question

My phone has been issues for some time with accessing and restoring photos and it's meant that I've not been able to back it up (the original problem was one that even Apple didn't understand and when I got it stable it still had issues, and I was getting conflicting advice, so that and a crashing iCloud backup meant I wasn't able to do anything beyond one that is months old on an old IOS. The phone has been behaving badly the last few days - getting very warm, flashing the white Apple logo screen, draining battery etc. Today it crashed entirely and alternates between the white apple logo, a black screen and the Recovery screen. When I connect to iTunes, I select Update and it goes part way through before it comes up with an Error 27. Apple support so far haven't had any advice aside from what is already online and so are advising a reset. Four questions:

Is there any way round the error, or a way to get the phone through the entire update?

If I am forced to restore and it works, is there any way I can access the "lost" photos etc with third party software? I was told by a Support person it was but they obviously couldn't tell me which to use and I know there are a lot of scams out there. I have a lot of photos (too many) that I would rather not lose if possible but i don't know how true it is that they are retrievable.

What will be happening to my Photo stream? I have an iPad which also has it turned on - it's currently in airplane mode in the hope I can keep that safe. Will my recent photos be in there from my phone? It was having issues restoring my photos and only seemed to update the stream when it went through a full update which it hadn't done for a week.

Is it possible that the restore won't work either and my phone is irretrievable?

Does anyone have any advice? I'm desperate to get something sorted out if possible.

No luck with Recboot? I've tried a couple options with exactly the same issue that happened to you. This happened the morning of Jan-15 for me (a week after I ran an iOS update 10). Have not been able to backup to iCloud or iTunes though I had tried multiple times, for an Apple ID prob that apple was never able to explain. Before I try Recboot would be indebted to you if you could let me know if it helped you?

Thank you

Check for hardware issues

Errors: 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 53, 56, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.

Your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.

  1. Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
  2. Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
  3. Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
  4. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

If you still see the error message, check for outdated or modified software.

(that last one means was the phone jailbroken?)

Thanks for this but I've already tried all of it and it made no difference. The phone is not jailbroken (not sure if that's good or bad in this situation?). Apple Support are suggesting a restore but I'm trying to avoid it, or at least work out if I do it what the chances are of my photos, files, texts etc being available afterwards.

Today I will try iTunes on another machine to rule out a computer issue and will try a PC too but other than that, I'm out of ideas and worried that I'm going to lose the last three months worth of data. Frustrating because iCloud was set up but it never backed up for some unknown reason and the phone wouldn't allow stable access to photos from other software even though they were all on there (also frustrating because Apple never understood that issue either and the solution to back up to iCloud didn't work) but of course now I can't turn it on to even try accessing them from anything.

If the phone works you can get content off it. If the phone doesn't work the content is already gone. If you haven't backed up the phone you have lost all data on it. As iCloud backup is automatic and daily after a one time setup perhaps you have backups you are unaware of. On rare occasion the free program "recboot" can make a phone in the state you describe usable again, if its memory has not been corrupted. Beyond that, I'm afraid you photos are gone. If you do succeed in getting the phone out of recovery mode there are options for getting your photos off it, but let's take the first step.

Thanks for the information, very helpful. I realised iTunes wasn't up to date on the other machine so I did that and tried to update. I got an error that it couldn't find the phone and when I tried a second time, I got error 27 so that looks to be the consistent issue. Is there any benefit of trying the update on a PC too?

I definitely know iCloud didn't do a full update because Apple couldn't see anything (only partial versions) when they looked, whether any apps have backed up, I'm not sure but it definitely won't include the photos as that was the main issue with the phone. Photos were saving to my photo stream (but only when the phone tried to restore photos in the photos and got nearly all the way through the process, which it hadn't done for a week) but will they remain there? My iPad that shows them is currently in airplane mode, should I do anything else? Obviously I can try to get the photos off it through my MacBook but I don't want to mess up what's there.

Now from trying various things online, my phone won't go into recovery mode. It's flashing between a white Apple logo screen, a blue screen (that can't be good!) and a black screen. Is there a way to get out of that?

I will take a look at recboot, thanks.

Rebooting won't make it worse, but it probably won't help either. If Recboot can't restore the phone to operation then it can't get any worse no matter what you do. It will have to be restored using recovery mode, which will wipe it clean.

The latest is I spoke to Apple support (before you had replied) and was able to get my phone back into Recovery mode. Was advised to try the update again but it didn't work and they have told me to try it again on a Windows machine which I can't do until tonight because it needs an update and iTunes to be installed on it. I'm not hopeful.

The phone was sitting on the white screen last night but had started flashing to a blue screen again. This morning it's black so I assume it's powered itself off.

They think it sounds like a hardware issue but interestingly said that if the Update won't work then a Recovery won't work either and the only option is to send it in for repair. Seems a bit strange to not even try to Recover it. I'm going to try the Windows machine and if it doesn't work I'll then try Recboot. After that, I'm not sure if I should attempt recovery? Surely I should just in case? At this stage, I'm not expecting to ever get it back working let alone recover any data and I'm not sure the cost of repair is worth the cost of the phone (which I was going to sell).
