Jan 14, 2016 1:32 AM in response to Bonnie Galloglyby lllaass,What model Mac? One symptom of a swollen battery is problems with the trackpad since it puts pressure on the underside of the trackpad.
- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
- Try starting in Safe Mode. If it does not happen then that means a software problem
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
- If it is repairable reinstall the OSX
How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support
- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Jan 16, 2016 8:36 AM in response to lllaassby Bonnie Gallogly,Thanks lllamas for your links. My computer model is listed in the header of my question. I followed your links for resetting SMC. No luck. I then reset NVRAM and got improvement in curser behavior but still not ideal. When I first started in safe mode the problem remained. I will go back to safe mode and try the Boot to Recovery using your link. I didn't do that the first time. I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow. If there are any other suggestions before my appointment I'll be happy to try but my techie skills are pretty basic. I will refresh my back up now that the curser will allow some input (before my appointment) Thank you again for the information. It was definitely helpful.

Jan 16, 2016 8:47 AM in response to Bonnie Galloglyby Bonnie Gallogly,Oops didn't realize the safe mode automatically did the disk utility stuff. I regularly repair my permissions. My curser worked only for around 3 minutes after the NVRAM so will be making a trip to apple store.
