It is a legitimate for a company to offer technical advice for any product. Apple "Authorizes" resellers, service providers and Consultants.

Jan 13, 2016 6:46 PM in response to Mgale43by ChitlinsCC,It is common for the scammers to "commandeer" the name of a legitimate company to complete their ruse. One that comes to mind is representing themselves as employees of a "computer sharing" App company

Feb 10, 2016 4:59 PM in response to John Galtby boxer1221,What do you suggest if someone called the number, paid the $29.95 fee and gave the serial number to the iPad? (Not me, my parents) What can someone do with the serial number of the ipad?

Feb 10, 2016 5:11 PM in response to boxer1221by ChitlinsCC,I just searched to make sure... just having the serial number does not really put the iPad or its data at risk
(Google your question verbatim - then filter by the last year)
- They should dispute the credit card charge with their CC issuer.
- They should report everything to local law enforcement (not that it will do any good - a $30 fraud is not gonna be high on their priority list)

Not much, really. It cannot be used to remotely access its data or determine its location, for example.
What you should do is to add it to your list of products in My Support Profile, if you haven't done so already: https://supportprofile.apple.com
That does nothing to establish ownership of course, but it is a convenient means of itemizing the Apple products that are actually yours. It also prevents someone else from doing that.

Jul 10, 2016 12:41 PM in response to Mgale43by nani12flower,Yes, it just happened yesterday. I was searching the web and I noticed a pop up that said to call apple support and they told me to help with this problem to add an app called Acu Protect for $34. It seemed real and I wanted the problem to go away so I purchased it. After searching the rating on the app and actually calling Apple support number that is included on the website, they told me it was a third party trying to get my money. Don't believe everything and be careful with pop up messages and call you get. It's sad how people are trying to steal people's money and identity.
Also how I figured this was a scam is that they weren't supper nice. You can tell about the customer service.
