Q: Photo albums in family sharing: everything?

I just can't find a clear article on this topic: if family sharing is turned on, it says that one *shared* album will be ''automatically'' created. I haven't seen this... (true: I did not select ''photos'' in iCloud Family setting because I have no idea what will go there...

Does this mean that all pictures taken with iPad, iPhones, and iDevices will go in that shared album ? Or can everyone still select ''what'' to enter in there ? (that 5000 pics limit can be filled ratherly quickly in today's trends....) And not everyone necessarily want to share every pic in the album.

And is this working only for pictures taken with Apple devices, or I can also put in there any pic taken with a real camera ?

Thanks

Rob

See:  Family Sharing - Apple Support

The family shared album behaves similar to other shared albums. You have to add photos manually to the album.

And you can add any photo you have in your photo library on any device.

When Family Sharing is turned on, a shared album is set up automatically in the Photos app on all family members’ devices. Then everyone can add photos, videos, and comments to the album and be notified when something new is added. You can add or view photos and videos from iPhoto on your Mac, and from Photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 7 or later.

    Léonie,

thanks for your reply. That would make sense and this would be the result i would indeed expect (chosing what to put in there). However, i do have Family sharing set and turned on, but see no such "shared" album in the app - neither on the Mac, or iPhone or iPad. So if this is supposed to be created "automatically" all i can tell is it has not been created in my case

Did you enable iCloud Photo Sharing in the Photos > iCloud Preferences on your Mac and iPhone?  Otherwise you will not see any shared albums at all.

Oh! That might explain... True, there is always the ''iCloud'' setting , and the''Photo setting of iCloud'' to keep the process simple...

I will give this a try and post back.

With this through : am I sure that I can select what I want to share, and same for every member ? (I don't want to end up with my ''own'' albums on my devices being crowded with all pictures of everyone, and vice versa !...  And not everything is relevant for sharing either.

    Thanks!

    Guess I'm getting there !

In my case, I just selected the last one you pointed out at bottom, and it looks like it just upload what I select.  Correct ? (Purpose of the 2 others seems indeed if I want to send everything on the cloud, then not exactely sure how to interpret the one ''My photo Stream : import from devices without iCloud Photo Library (???) and send new photos to the My Photo Stream album on those devices'' (???)...

In any way, thanks a lot léonie, you got me on the right track with this !

    You're welcome

Yes. That will enable the Shared albums, and you can share to the family sharing album what you select.

(Purpose of the 2 others seems indeed if I want to send everything on the cloud, then not exactely sure how to interpret the one ''My photo Stream : import from devices without iCloud Photo Library (???) and send new photos to the My Photo Stream album on those devices'' (???)...
    1. iCloud Photo Library will upload all your photos in your system photo library to iCloud.  You may need to sign up for more cloud storage if you want to use that.
    2. My Photo Stream will upload all your new photos when you add new photos to your Photos Library on your Mac and download any new photos from your iPhone, iPad, iPod ...    Only the most recent 1000 photos will be kept in My Photo Stream in  iCloud, and it does not count against your iCloud storage.
