Jan 14, 2016 2:50 AM in response to icecreamtravelerby léonie, are you using iCloud Photo Library? Books do not sync between Macs with iCloud Photo Library.
You may have opened an older version of your library, perhaps from a backup frive.
You can see which library is currently open by looking at the Photos > Preferences > General. This panel is showing the path to your current library.
Where is your Photos library stored? Is it on an external drive or in your Pictures folder?

Jan 14, 2016 3:49 AM in response to léonieby icecreamtraveler,Hi,
I checked, I am not using Icloud Photo Library.
Yes, it is showing the path to the library, what should it be? Is there a system default?
The iphotos library is on my Mac drive, not an external drive.
Thanks

Jan 14, 2016 4:46 AM in response to léonieby icecreamtraveler,Thx, I opened the folder in Finder from IPhotos and I can see an IPhoto library and a Photos Library. It's currently set to the Photos library. Is there a way to switch to the IPhoto library and see if I can get the books back?
Thanks for your help!

Jan 14, 2016 5:04 AM in response to icecreamtravelerby léonie,Have your books been created in iPhoto?
Photos does not transfer the books well. It is much better to finish book projects in iPhoto, for books may be migrated as simple albums. See this link: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
Some photo books and calendars, made with themes that are no longer supported in Photos, migrate to Albums.
You can run iPhoto on MacOS X El Capitan, but you need iPhoto 9.6.1.
Did you update to this version?
(See Barney's User Tip: Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store)
