iMac unresponsive on wake-up panic report

Hi,

I recently installed El Capitan on my 2 machines, a Macbook Pro and an iMac (27", late 2012).

To have a clean install, I did it through booting on a USB key, formatting the drive, installing El Capitan, and installing all my apps.

The apps installed are the same on both machines, only difference is that the iMac is booting from an external SSD drive connected on a thunderbolt port, but it is working like this since 2 years (the genuine hard disk is used exclusively for data).

The macBook is working perfectly. But I have some serious issues with the iMac. When I leave it a few hours and come back to work on it, I have one of this cases:

  • I cannot login, I have the spinning wheel immediately and I cannot enter my password
  • or I can enter my password, but then the spinning wheel appears before any app is displayed, and I am also stuck
  • or sometimes the apps appear, but as soon as I try to work on one of them, it either freezes or disappears. I can not even access the menu to do a shutdown, the menu items are displayed, but clicking on them does nothing. If I try to use spotlight (I wanted to launch Activity Monitor), the window to enter my search term appears, but as soon as I type a single character, the window disappears, as well as the magnifying glass icon in the top bar 😕

In any of these cases, my only option is to switch off the iMac and restart it. Then it works without problem, until I let it sleep...

Earlier this week, when I was working on my iMac (after a restart of course), it crashed. I was able to copy the panic report and send it by e-mail, I hope it can give some information about the nature of the issue. Here it is:

The graphics processor seems to be faulty. It's not unusual for such a fault to be manifested for the first time after a system upgrade.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi,

An update on this issue. I reset NVRAM and SMC, but it changed absolutely nothing, the iMac was unusable the next time I woke it up.

Before bringing the iMac to a repair center, I made an interesting experiment: I installed the caffeine utility to prevent the iMac to go in sleep mode. In this mode, I was able to use my iMac during more than 48 hours without experiencing a single problem.

Does this contradict the hypothesis of a hardware failure?

The panic report indicates that software isn't the problem. It's possible that your external boot drive setup is the problem, maybe it's not waking up properly. You should install the OS on the internal drive and boot from it to test.

BTW it's not necessary or advised to install a third party app, Caffeine, to do what you can do in your system settings. Third party stuff just introduces the chance for more problems.
