Why do I have to provide device id

I was at the store the other day and was asked for the device id when using Apple Pay. Today I used Apple Pay to reload my dunkin donuts app and the transaction was cancelled. When I called dunkin I was told I have to provide the device id. Anyone else experience this? Kind of takes away the convenience of using Apple Pay.

YES! It's beyond stupid! it's like saying, "no, the fact you have the device in your hand and it's validated with your fingerprint is not enough." This happened to be at the supermarket. Apparently now all purchases over $50 need this ID. So then I have to:


1) authorize the purchase with my thumb

2) unlock my phone

3) find the wallet app

4) find the card I want

5) tap the info button

6) find the device ID


It's just pointless and makes using my credit card so much easier. It's a total Apple Pay killer. They're going to need to move the device ID to the lock screen for this to work now.

I've run into the same thing and sent feedback to Apple about this. Asking for it is absurd as it doesn't make the transaction safer by store, it may make the transaction less safe for us (I'm not sure but would like to hear from Apple about that.) and it certainly makes using ApplePay more time consuming than using a credit card directly.


I told Apple that if they didn't stop this nonsense they are going to lose business because instead of making things easier than using a credit card, it's become hard to use than credit cards.


I surely wish Apple was monitoring this thread and would have someone chime in with an answer to this.


If this persists, I'm going back to direct credit card use with chipped cards and dump ApplePay due to its inconvenience.

I don't know why Apple wouldn't have control over how ApplePay is used by merchants. They can easily put procedural requirements as part of their contracts with merchants and/or the services being sold for ApplePay collection. Considering that by getting the Device ID merchants don't improve their protection from customer fraud, there is no legitimate reason to require the Device ID. The whole point of signing is worthless as well. If a merchant has the customer use ApplePay they are fulfilling their requirements for fraud to the bank/credit card company so fraudulent card liability is the bank/credit card company. If the merchant has the customer dip a chipped credit card, again they fulfill their fraud requirements and the bank/credit card company takes on fraud liability. If the merchant has the customer swipe a chipped credit card, that doesn't fulfill their fraud requirements and the merchant assume liability for bad cards.

1, 2 & 3 can be done with a double-tap on the iPhone home button. In my case, 4, 5, & 6 are a snap because I use only one CC for ApplePay.

I use multiple credit cards in ApplePay, like many people. That means your short cuts unfortunately don't work. What I have done, as a work around, is dump ApplePay at more than a few stores because the stores have made it easier to use credit cards which I can dip. I'd still prefer ApplePay, but unless Apple takes charge of this absurd thing the stores are doing, I'm going to use ApplePay less and less. As more stores require this, (some require the cashier to look at my iPhone to see the number for themselves) ApplePay will become relegated to no use at all soon. I'm using it half the time I used it just a month ago.


Apple, if you're reading in your forums, the stores are about to kill ApplePay if you let them. I suggest doing something about it.

Unfortunately they (Apple) don't read these forums. The folks on these forums are just end-to-end users like yourself helping each out other. Your best option would be to let Apple know here -- https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-pay.html
