Q: Mac Photos app only shows 167 out of 1600  photos as available for import. How do I import the rest?

I want to sell my wife's old iPhone 5s but need to get all her old pictures off. There are about 1600 of them.

I plugged her phone into my mac, opened the Photos app, and 167 pictures showed up under "import new items." Where are the rest? There is no "import all" option. Why does it only think 10% are new? I need to get these all saved ASAP. Any ideas?

Thanks so much.

There are about 1600 of them.

Are all these photos in the Camera Roll or have they been synced to the iPhone using iTunes Photo sync?  Only the photos in the Camera Roll can be downloaded to the Mac.

If the photos are in the Camera Roll, but Photos does not show them,  quit Photos and launch Image Capture instead.  Does Image Capture show more photos?

Then download them using image Capture to a folder on your Desktop and add them from there to the Photos library.

If the photos have been synced to the iPhone using iTunes, see:  Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support

    • You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

Could it be that the ones I don't see are stored in iCloud? I updated the phone and all those old ones are not showing up... they are basically "blank," like there are spaces for them but there are not there...

Do you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on the iPhone? In the Settings > iCloud > Photos&Camera?

Then the iPhone may only have the optimized versions stored and the originals are in iCloud .  The iPhone needs to be connected to Wi-Fi  and properly charged to be able to download the originals.

Well, the phone is charged to 100% and connected to 125Mbit wifi, and it only seems to grab the images as I scroll through, and only load the hi-res when I click on one, and even after all of that the Photos app on the Mac stlll doesn't recognize any of those as importable, nor does the image capture app see them.

The only thing I can think to do is try to download them all from iCloud, but using the web browser trying to download 1500 photos is impossible - it treats each one individually, so I have accept them all individually.

This is really stupid. I don't know what's wrong with Apple - maybe they are just trying to make it hard on people so they will pay for expanded iCloud storage. This is absurd.

If the Mac does not even see the photos that have been downloaded to the iPhone, restart the iPhone while it is connected to the USB port.
