What are you trying to do?

Do you want to open your iPhoto Library in iPhoto or in the new Photos.app?  and which version of MacOS X and iPhoto do you have installed on your Mac?

If you upgraded your Mac to MacOS X 10.11,2, El Capitan, you can open your Photo Libraries either in the new Photos for mac application or you can continue to use iPhoto, but  only iPhoto 9.6.1 will run  on El Capitan.

To update iPhoto (See Barney's User Tip:   Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store)

Once an iPhoto Library has been opened in Photos the filename extension will change to ".migratedphotolibrary".  To open this library again in iPhoto, change the filename extension back to ".photolibrary".

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm S\sorry for the confusion. What happened was I copied by iPhoto library to a usb, and then wiped my machine and installed el capitan.

Now I have my "iPhoto library copy" just sitting on my desktop but I cannot move them to photos.

Now I'm trying to find a way to add them to "photos" so all my pictures will be in one place.

Do you already have a Photos Library?  Photos cannot merge libraries. You would have to export the photos from the smaller library and import them into the larger library to merge the libraries.

You can open your iPhoto Library in Photos. Drag the iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the Dock. Photos will create a new Photos Library showing you your iPhoto Photos. if you are seeing the warning, that the library has already been migrated, click "Open Photos".

    Hi Leonie,

    thanks for your help.

I am not able to drag the library into photos in the dock. That is when I get the error.

Yes I already have a photos library. When I go there though I only see the photos that are from my iCloud account, not the photos from my iPhoto library.

Select the "iPhoto Library copy" in the Finder.  The filename extension is probably ".migratedphotolibrary".  Change the filename extension back to ".photolibrary".

To change the filename extension select the library in the Finder and enter ⌘I to open the Info panel.  In the filename section of the panel disable "Hide extension", then enter the changed extension ".photolibrary".
