Q: Mac Mini isn't detecting display through mDP-VGA adapter

Hi, I just got a Mac Mini with 2 Thunderbolt ports and I'm trying to connect my 2nd monitor with a VGA input to my Mac via a mini Displayport to VGA adapter. The monitor is powered on and cables and adapter are securely connected but the Mac does not detect the display. Holding down the Option key and use the "Detect Display" button does nothing. The display will not show up.

The cable and the mini displayport to VGA adapter are not the problem because it has been working fine with my Windows PC for the past 2 years. I've tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC as per many posts instruction but it still wouldn't work. Any suggestions to get this thing working?

Mac mini (Late 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)
