Q: Unable to boot into mac or bootcamp

I was stupid to create a new partition from bootcamp so that I can share files between mac and windows easily. It converted the partitions to dynamic I think. I can't boot into mac or windows. Is there a way I can boot into mac without reinstalling ? My time machine back up is very old so I want to get back into mac without restoring it. I appreciate it very much and would follow all the instructions.

I was able to get into internet recovery and terminal.

Please install OS X on an external disk and boot from it - How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support . Try and use the same version of OS X as you have on the internal disk to avoid issues. You can do this using Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

Install GPT Fdisk once you have the external disk OS X working - http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ .

My mac had el capitan but I tried several times to install el capitan on my external USB drive and it got stuck for several hours. I was able to install Mavericks on the drive using another mac laptop I have. What would be my next step ? What do I have to do in GPT Fdisk ?

    1. Do you have cables/adapters to use Target Disk Mode - Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support ?

    2. If TDM is not possible, boot the non-working Mac from the USB. I assume you have GPT Fdisk installed on the USB.

I do not have any cables for target disk mode. I was able to purchase a 1 TB external hard drive and install el capitan on it along with GPT Fdisk. How would I boot into GPT Fdisk now on my computer that needs fixing ? Any commands that I have to execute ?

GPT Fdisk is not a bootable utility. You should execute a SMC/NVRAM reset prior to trying this method.

    1. You will need to boot into OS X on the external disk by powering down and powering up, and holding the Alt/Option and selecting the external disk.

    2. You can also connect the external disk when in Recovery Console and set it as the Startup Disk, when you are exiting the Recovery Console.

Can you run diskutil list and post the output? Your internal disk should still be disk0.

    Run

    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0

    p

    Can you post the output?

    Backups-MacBook-Pro:~ backup$

    Backups-MacBook-Pro:~ backup$ sudo gdisk /dev/disk0

    Password:

    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.1

Caution: invalid backup GPT header, but valid main header; regenerating

    backup header from main header.

Caution! After loading partitions, the CRC doesn't check out!

Warning! Main and backup partition tables differ! Use the 'c' and 'e' options

on the recovery & transformation menu to examine the two tables.

Warning! One or more CRCs don't match. You should repair the disk!

    Partition table scan:

      MBR: MBR only

      BSD: not present

      APM: not present

      GPT: damaged

Found valid MBR and corrupt GPT. Which do you want to use? (Using the

GPT MAY permit recovery of GPT data.)

    1 - MBR

    2 - GPT

    3 - Create blank GPT

    Your answer:

When I entered the sudo command, it gave me a popup saying that the disk I inserted is not readable by the computer (strange since it's brand new). It gave an option to Initialize, Ignore or eject. Initialize is taking me to disk utility. Not sure if it is relevant to anything but stating what I found.

Do not make any changes to any disks. Please use GPT (2).

    Your answer: 2

Warning! Main partition table overlaps the first partition by 34 blocks!

You will need to delete this partition or resize it in another utility.

Warning! Secondary partition table overlaps the last partition by

    4613656342287257470 blocks!

You will need to delete this partition or resize it in another utility.

I tried posting it but the non-english characters are not allowing me to post the entire thing. Do you want me to delete the other characters and post ?
