Jan 15, 2016 3:59 AM in response to Greenmoleby Luis Sequeira1,You may want to look at this document: About the screens you see when your Mac starts up - Apple Support
It appears that your mac can't find a proper system to start up.
What happened when you tried recovery? Could you at least start from the recovery partition or not at all?
If you could, you should run Disk Utility and test the drive.

Jan 15, 2016 4:23 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1by Greenmole,Hi Luis,
Thanks for the response.
My computer is a personal MacPro , about 2014, but not the retina version - 8MB RAM, 750GB HDD, the OS is El Capitan.
I tried following the link you gave me, I get as far as the Login window and then it goes to the Prohibitory Symbol.
I have tried the recovery and it passed on the Disk Utility test. But it still did not start. Any more ideas, this is the first time I have had trouble with my Mac and of course, I do not have a recent back up and do not want to try that way yet.
Any ides.
Thanks.
Peter.
