i expect drop ail will never slow with my setup

but slow is not no

or that too could be a warning.

need stronger medicine

force quitting mail does not help

and it is a slow and painful process when your system runs like treacle.

and can never quite get to delete message before whole system locks up

i have high hopes for killall in the terminal

so sad never had such a problem before

I think I have it under control but do not know how much I have lost.

Being an old unix guy had a terminal on the dock

start up, get mouse ready, start terminal before Mail chokes me out

killall Mail

then get activity monitor up too on on the dock.

So see Mail and his buddy mdworker are eating memory like there is no tomorrow

So search for Yosemite Mail and memory problems

Remove Mail saved state

OS X will save window locations and the open documents for most open programs, so if you quit the program these items will be restored when it is next launched. If after upgrading OS X there is some problem with how the prior saved state of Mail is being handled, then this could be the reason for Mail crashing. Therefore, try removing Mail’s saved state, and then re-launching Mail:

1. Go to the Finder
2. Hold the Option key and then select Library from the Go menu
3. Go to the Containers > com.apple.mail > Data > Library > Saved Application State folder
4. Locate and remove the folder called “com.apple.mail.savedState
5. Re-launch Mail

Temporarily disable Mail accounts

Go to the Internet Accounts system preferences, and then uncheck the Mail option for each account you have listed there. When all are unchecked, open Mail to see if it will launch correctly. Then quit Mail, re-enable your Mail accounts in the System Preferences, and try opening the program again.

Before all this tried to make a backup.

Carbon Copy Cloner seems to think all this frufrarah gouged a 1-2 Gb black hole in the surface of the hard disk.

At lease it could not find anything to grab when it tried to copy.

When I did it myself I got Error -8084 and maybe it worked maybe not

So it seems that in addition to all the the lost time and frustration

there may have been some damage to the hard drive.

BAD SHOW APPLE.

Well not exactly solved as extracted from morass.

in Yosemite NEVER but a large file in DRAFT unless you want a memory leak/snafu

That's the solution until Apple pays more attention to what it is doing.

Last chapter, CCC was not able to make a backup of my mishmash of Power PC volumes, intel volumes and various shades of OS X.

So good news is no media problems

bad news is no backup.

Oh and I did seem to lose the App Store Boo Hoo

maybe more but am not looking
