Q: Text Message Forwarding with El Capitan?

I have a MacBook, late 2010, and while I had Yosemite installed on my Mac; text message forwarding worked wonderfully with my iPhone 6+, with iOS 8!  Now that I have upgraded to El Capitan, text message forwarding no longer works.  My iPhone 6+ is currently running iOS 9.2.  Did the text message forwarding only work with the Yosemite OS and iOS 8 or is there something I can do to make text message forwarding work with my current setup of El Capitan and iOS 9.2?  Please help!  Thank you in advance for your time and attention to this matter.

    Hey ccm2000,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It seems like you were happily using text message forwarding in OS X Yosemite and iOS 8. This feature is still available in El Capitan and iOS 9!

You may need to go through the setup process again since you've upgraded you software. Here are the steps from Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac:

With Continuity, all the SMS and MMS text messages that you send and receive on your iPhone can also appear on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch. You can also reply to your contacts from whichever device is closest to you, including your iPad or Mac.

You can start a conversation in the Messages app or click a phone number in Safari, Contacts, or Calendar.

Set up SMS and MMS with Continuity

    1. You need iOS 8 or later on your iOS devices and OS X Yosemite or later on your Mac.

    2. Sign in to iMessage with the same Apple ID on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac.

    3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Add a check to both your phone number and email address. Then go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding and enable the device or devices that you want to forward messages to.

    4. Look for a code on the Mac, iPad, or iPod touch that you enabled. Then enter this verification code on your iPhone.

    All the best.

    Dear jeremy_v,

Thank you for taking time to help me.  I followed your instructions, but no code ever came up for me to enter.  Is the code generated from this process specific to my devices or is it a universal code?  I am not sure why my mac and phone are not making the connection that they made before.  What can I try next?  Thank you for your continued support in the matter.

    Sincerely,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. The code that appears is specific to your devices. If it doesn't appear, next I'd suggest checking these settings mentioned in Get help using Continuity with your iOS device or your Mac:

Check these settings on your iOS device:

    • Make sure that Wi-Fi is on in Settings > Wi-Fi.

    • Make sure that your iOS devices are on the same network: On each device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and compare the network names.

    • Make sure that Bluetooth is on in Settings > Bluetooth.

    • Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps. Make sure that Handoff is on.

Check these settings on your Mac:

    • Go to the Wi-Fi icon at the top of your screen and make sure that Wi-Fi is on.

    • Make sure that your Mac and iOS devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi on each iOS device and compare the network name with the one on your Mac.

    • Go to the Bluetooth icon at the top of your screen and make sure that Bluetooth is on.

    • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click General, then select "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices." If you don't see this setting, your Mac might not support Handoff.

    • Open the FaceTime app. Go to FaceTime > Preferences and turn on Calls From iPhone.

    • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences and click iCloud. Click Sign Out, then sign in again.

If you still can't complete the setup process, next try signing out of iMessage on both your iPhone and Mac, and then signing back in.

You can do this with help from Link your iPhone number and Apple ID to use iMessage and FaceTime. First complete the steps under "Unlink your phone number associated with your Apple ID" and then the ones under "Get started on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" and "Get started on your Mac."

    Sincerely.

    Dear Brett,

Thank you fro your help with this matter. Unfortunately, I followed your instructions, but a code still would not pop up.  Is there anything else that I can to to try to get the code to come back?  Thank you again for your time and attention to this matter.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for replying and for going through these steps with us.

Since the verification code still doesn't appear, you may want to contact Apple Support for more help. You can use one of the methods on https://expresslane.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.

    Sincerely.
