It sounds like you are also concerned with getting some data off of the computer so that it is safe and you can use it. If your MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt port and you have another Mac that also has Thunderbolt, you can use target disk mode to connect the two computers and retrieve the files you need. Another possibility would be if you have File Sharing already enabled on the MacBook Air, another computer on the same network could get the files that way. See this article - How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac.
