Getting rid of old Apple ID

When I bought my iPhone 4S I was with BT for internet etc. I subsequently changed to Sky (although now back with BT) my Apple ID was ..........@btinternet.com and then subsequently changed to ......@gmail.com. However, on my phone (an iPad) when I want to update my software it keeps going back to my old BTinternet ID although under settings my Apple ID is shown as ..........@gmail.com (i.e. my current ID). Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of my old BTinternet ID please. I have tried everything including a complete reset.

My main problem is that I can't update anything as it keeps asking for my original Apple ID password which I no longer have.

It doesn't want your original Apple ID password. It wants the current password to the Apple ID that was used to enable Find My iPhone on the device, under Settings > iCloud. Whichever Apple ID you used for iCloud on that device is the one you want to use.
