Q: Feedback: The rating system

Hi there. I wanted to share some feedback with the hosts.

Currently, the answered/helpful system does not seem very obvious to users. Most times, users never bother to mark an answer helpful or mark a question solved. This causes many users to get frustrated and not bother to contribute. The more obvious the rating system is, the more people will want to contribute because they know they will get rewarded for their work. I think when people sign up for ASC, they should go through a tutorial that includes more information about the rating system. This way, it's fair.

Even when I do answer someone's question, they mark it as helpful instead of solved. This unanswered question issue also causes a lot of clutter on the forum because most people won't look at a thread if it is not solved. Making this system more clear would clean up a lot of duplicate threads.

The main issue is that people can't tell people about the system because it's not allowed, and people don't bother to ask.

These are just my thoughts on the issue.

Best regards,

Austin

I fully agree searching for answers would be made better if the OP's mark the proper post solved. That's one of the reasons for the point system. Unfortunately it's impossible to make a person award points.

"The main issue is that people can't tell people about the system because it's not allowed, and people don't bother to ask."

I've check on this point. If the OP asks how the point system works or says something like "Wow, thanks, I could have never done it without you but I can't figure out this point system." You can tell them tap solve if they think the answer solved the problem and helpful for answers that you found helpful." "One solved, 2 helpfuls per thread.". Tou just can't suggest awarding of points.

Please keep contributing, the Forum needs all the talent it can get.

    Not very subtle, huh?

A better ending might be "Let us know how it worked out." This covers the relevant point = "Did any of this resolve your issue?"

If it comes up, I usually reference the article Lawrence linked to. Or, if appropriate, the ToU covers it well:

Do not ask for points. If you feel the system is not clear to users, please provide feedback to Apple; do not instruct other users unless they ask.

Thank you, that is correct. They have to ask. I felt it would be rude not to answer the OP so I checked this out upstairs.

    Almost forgot...

    • search terms site:help.apple.com = Help or "User Guides" pages such as > http://help.apple.com/ipad/9/ from [ "iPad User Guide" site:help.apple.com ]

Another cool thing about Google is its variety of [Search Tools] filtering

I don't think anyone has brought this up here yet, so I think it would be good to point out the fairly recent " Recommended" system. This system allows the Community Specialists to mark people's posts as "Recommended," which earns them five points. This should at least mostly address your concerns, as even if the OP doesn't mark your post, the forum staff can if they choose.

Thank you. I had to find out where the line was between suggesting and answering was. Although a audio "Ya'll come back now." said by Jed Clampett would be welcome addition.

I mentioned it but didn't explain it as well as you.

Yeah, it's been discussed several times. As for posters - they can "coat" it and/or make as oblique a reference as possible - it doesn't change the fact that it is still asking for points. And, in order not to allow the slightest possibility that something I said may be interpreted as asking for points, I usually forego saying anything unless it's a case where I'm asking the OP to run a test and post back with the results, but then I'll just say "post back with the results" or whatever is appropriate.

FWIW, in all the time I've been here, I must say that I've never seen three "suggestions" to award points at the end of one post.

I fully agree. No asking for points, no saying anything that can be misinterpreted as asking for points. No need to risk a nastygram. My example was of the OP asking for guidance was completely different.

A reminder... there is no "index" of Apple Recommends - unless one uses a Google Site Search  of discussions.apple.com

    syntax:

    • ALL Apple Recommends = [  "response to * Recommended" site:discussions.apple.com  ] no brackets - YES QUOTES in Google Search field
    • add search terms for a topic = [ search terms  "response to * Recommended" site:discussions.apple.com  ] no brackets - YES QUOTES in Google Search field
    • Your own (or someone else's) awards = [  stevejobsfan0123 "response to * Recommended" site:discussions.apple.com  ] no brackets - YES QUOTES in Google Search field
caveat = this returns every thread where an award has been made AND the UserName has participated or is mentioned
    • USE Google Search tools "Time" > Custom > FROM "05/01/2015" to exclude any erroneous Pre-Implementation results

This may not be 100% Apple Recommends, but is likely close to it - turns out there are a BUNCH - about 500 so far?

You're welcome, Sir! You read Legalese well. Sure would Paw!*

    * Picking nits...

" The Ballad of Jed Clampett " ... was written and composed by Paul Henning, and sung by Jerry Scoggins, who was accompanied by bluegrass musicians Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. When the theme was released as a single, Flatt sang lead vocals instead.

Thank you but do you mean the line  below ?

" Tou just can't suggest awarding of points."

If so in all honestly it wasn't a good reading of legalese it was a misspelling. The first word should be You not Tou.
